Sales drop and intensifying competition

In the first six weeks of 2024, Apple experienced a significant setback in China as iPhone sales plummeted by 24% year-on-year, according to research firm Counterpoint. The decline is attributed to heightened competition from local rivals, notably Huawei, which emerged as a chief competitor in the premium smartphone segment. Counterpoint’s report underscores the challenges faced by Apple in maintaining its market share in a landscape increasingly dominated by domestic players.

Huawei’s surge and potential concerns for Apple

Contrary to Apple’s struggles, Huawei witnessed a remarkable 64% increase in unit sales during the same period, securing a more substantial foothold in the Chinese smartphone market. This surge in Huawei’s performance raises concerns about a potential slowdown in demand for Apple products. The report indicates that Apple’s revenue forecast for the current quarter falls $6 billion below Wall Street expectations. Consequently, Apple’s stock faced a 2.8% decline, reflecting a 12% loss in value for the year, trailing behind its big tech peers in the United States.

Market share dynamics and competitive landscape

Counterpoint’s analysis reveals a notable shift in market dynamics, with Apple’s share of the Chinese smartphone market dropping to 15.7%, positioning it in fourth place. This marks a significant dip from the second-place ranking it held in the year-ago period with a 19% market share. Meanwhile, Huawei’s market share expanded from 9.4% to 16.5%, securing the second spot. The overall smartphone market in China also contracted by 7%, further complicating Apple’s position. Counterpoint’s senior analyst, Mengmeng Zhang, attributes Apple’s challenges to intense competition from a resurgent Huawei at the high end, coupled with pricing pressures from competitors like OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi. In response to these challenges, Apple had already initiated discounts of up to 500 yuan on its official sites last month.
