  • Amazon released that about 140 stores employ the cashierless shopping technology— the “Just Walk Out” system to enable customers’ self-service shopping.
  • Although computer vision algorithms will automatically deal with problematic shopping, human reviewers are necessary to help improve accuracy.
  • Viral cashierless shopping technology may lead to some problems such as unemployment.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that, in addition to lowering its reliance on its own cashierless shopping technology, it intends to introduce the technology into more third-party stores this year.

Amazon’s plan for the cashierless shopping technology—Just Walk Out

According to Amazon, about 140 stores use the “Just Walk Out” system, which enables customers to enter a store using an app, pay for their purchases at the register, and leave with their items. This year, Amazon will more than double that amount.

Amazon refuted a report published this month by the tech website The Information, which claimed that the technology watches customers while they shop using human reviewers in India. However, Amazon said human reviewers are required to help increase accuracy though computer vision algorithms automatically take care of generating receipts.

Instead, it will rely on “smart” shopping carts, which record the items that customers purchase, charge them as they exit the store, and provide a digital receipt. According to Amazon, Fresh store customers who use the carts spend more money than those who don’t. Fresh is a store that has delivery options.

Worries of the Just Walk Out

However, Just Walk Out has been plagued by hiccups, such as customers not understanding how it operates, missing items, and receipts that take hours or even days to arrive.

Earlier this month, Amazon made numerous layoffs from its physical retail team, capping a string of layoffs that began a few months ago.

It has dabbled in a number of brick-and-mortar store concepts that it later abandoned, such as bookstores and stores that carried well-reviewed products from its website.
