What happened: Nokia to lead EU drone and robotics project

Nokia has been selected to lead PROACTIF, an EU-funded initiative involving 42 organisations from 13 countries. The project aims to develop autonomous drone and robotics systems to enhance the monitoring and protection of critical infrastructure across Europe. Participants include tech firms, defence companies, start-ups, and academic institutions.

The consortium aims to develop nine tech components and five unmanned platforms, with a focus on autonomy, interoperability, and fast deployment. The project could generate around €90 million by 2035 and lead to 50 products and over 15 new patents. While it targets civil uses like monitoring grids, railways, and ports, defence applications remain possible. Funding comes from the EU’s Chips Joint Undertaking, which also includes non-EU participants.
