  • Silicone Connect and Nokia completed the modernisation of the southern backbone using DWDM technology, enhancing Congo’s digital infrastructure.
  • The project positions Congo as a key technological hub in Central Africa, with future expansion plans for the northern region by 2025.

On July 12, 2024, Silicone Connect celebrated a significant technological milestone with the official reception of the modernised southern backbone project in Bondi, Hinda, near Pointe-Noire. The event, in collaboration with Nokia, marked the completion of a major upgrade using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, poised to revolutionise connectivity across Central Africa.

Modernisation of the southern backbone

The reception ceremony, held in Bondi, Hinda, brought together key dignitaries, including ministers Juste Léon Ibombo of Posts, Telecommunications, and Digital Economy, and Emile Ouosso of Energy and Hydraulics, along with Omar Denis Bongo Ondimba, Chairman of the Board of Silicone Connect. In his opening remarks, Gaëtan Soltesz, Director General of Silicone Connect, highlighted the origins and significance of this ambitious project. He emphasised that this modernisation not only strengthens the national infrastructure but also positions Congo as a central technological hub in the region.

Looking ahead, Silicone Connect announced plans to extend the backbone network to the northern part of the country, connecting Brazzaville to Ouesso by early 2025. This initiative is part of a broader vision to enhance technological development and regional integration, providing high-quality, reliable connectivity across Congo and beyond. The collaboration with Nokia ensures a robust and scalable infrastructure, with the DWDM technology significantly increasing the fibre optic transmission capacity to meet the growing demands for communication and data.

“This development not only strengthens national infrastructure but also positions Congo as a technological hub in Central Africa.”
