- Consultation launched for upper block of 1.4 GHz spectrum
- Auction aims to support 4G and 5G services
What Happened: Ofcom launches consultation on auctioning the upper block of the 1.4 GHz spectrum to support 4G and 5G services.
Ofcom has launched a consultation to auction the upper block of the 1.4 GHz spectrum (1492-1517 MHz) for 4G and 5G services. This spectrum was harmonised for mobile use in 2015. A portion of it is already in use by mobile operators in the UK. The expansion is expected to improve service quality, especially in areas with inconsistent coverage, such as indoors and remote locations.
Ofcom has considered potential interference with Inmarsat satellite receivers, which are crucial for maritime and aviation communications. To address this, the consultation proposes power restrictions near ports and airports. These restrictions will adjust over time based on their impact. Additionally, the auction will follow a sealed-bid, single-round format. The winning bidder will pay the second-highest bid, ensuring a fair allocation. Furthermore, Ofcom invites comments from stakeholders by 25 April 2025.

Why It’s Important
This auction will provide 4G and 5G services with more spectrum to enhance performance. It aims to improve coverage, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. Ofcom’s consideration of interference shows its commitment to balancing mobile services with other critical communications. The auction process is designed to be fair and efficient, promoting competition in the telecom sector. This move is a step forward in supporting the UK’s telecom infrastructure as demand for mobile services continues to grow.
