• Apple announced on February 21 that after retesting all iPhone 15 models’ batteries, they confirmed meeting higher standards, retaining 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 complete charging cycles under ideal conditions.
  • The testing involved specific conditions for 1,000 charge-discharge cycles, with Apple continuously improving iPhone battery components and power management systems.
  • Despite longer battery life for iPhone 15 models compared to previous ones, Apple is still investigating the battery lifespan of older iPhone models, emphasising that battery lifespan ultimately depends on regular device usage and charging habits.

On February 21, Apple announced that it has retested all iPhone 15 models’ batteries and confirmed they could meet higher standards. In today’s updated support documents, Apple stated that the batteries of iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max can retain 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 complete charging cycles under ideal conditions, compared to its previous claim of 80% retention after 500 cycles for older iPhone models.

Apple informed MacRumors that its latest tests on iPhone 15 models involved subjecting the batteries to 1,000 charge-discharge cycles under specific conditions, but it did not provide any specific details about the process. Apple added that it has been continuously improving iPhone battery components and power management systems.

The battery life span depends on regular usage and charging habits

This disclosure implies that compared to previous iPhone models, the iPhone 15 models’ batteries will take longer to decline to 80% of their maximum capacity. However, Apple stated it is ‘investigating’ the battery lifespan of older iPhone models, so comparisons based on the latest test parameters are still pending observation.

In the support documents, Apple stated that the battery lifespan of any iPhone model ultimately depends on the device’s regular usage and charging habits.

To check an iPhone’s battery capacity, users can open the ‘Settings’ app, then tap on ‘Battery’ → ‘Battery Health and Charging’. On iPhone 15 models updated to the latest iOS 17.4 beta, this menu is now called ‘Battery Health’ and provides more intuitive battery information.
