What happened

Meta unveiled its latest innovations, including the Orion augmented reality glasses and Quest 3S mixed reality headset, at its annual Connect conference, according to report from Reuters.

Orion is touted as the world’s most advanced AR glasses, weighing less than 100 grams. The glasses allow users to see virtual objects in their real environment, access apps such as WhatsApp and Messenger, make video calls and get information about objects in their line of sight. Powered by a custom chip, Orion is expected to have a consumer version in development.

Meta also unveiled the Quest 3S mixed reality headset, available in two storage options priced at $299.99 and $399.99 respectively. Available on 15 October, the Quest 3S is designed to provide a more affordable entry point for users interested in mixed reality experiences.

Meta has also slashed the price of its 512GB Quest 3 headset from $649.99 to $499.99. Meanwhile, the older Quest 2 and high-end Quest Pro units will be discontinued, signalling a shift in the company’s product strategy.

Why it’s important

These announcements are significant as they mark Meta’s continued push into the AR and Mixed Reality markets to integrate advanced technology into everyday life. The Orion glasses, which provide hands-free access to communication tools and information, could redefine how users interact with their environment, making digital content more immersive and practical.

As Mark Zuckerberg pointed out, these innovations are not just about entertainment, they are about improving everyday life by seamlessly blending digital and physical experiences. In addition, the launch of Llama 3.2, Meta’s first open-source multimodal AI model, reflects the company’s commitment to improving the user experience through AI-driven technology.

The lightweight versions of Llama 3.2 that can run on mobile devices represent a shift towards accessibility and versatility in AI applications. This focus on making advanced technologies available aligns with Meta’s broader vision of creating a connected digital ecosystem, further emphasising the significance of these latest announcements.
