Finland’s leading research institute, VTT Technical Research Centre, in collaboration with computer company IQM Quantum Computers, has developed and launched Europe’s first 50-qubit superconducting quantum computer. The 50-qubit system serves as a baseline for IQM’s Radiance 54-qubit quantum computer. The project, initiated in November 2020 with a budget of 20.7 million euros (21.85 million U.S. dollars) from the Finnish government, was completed in three phases: a 5-qubit system in 2021, a 20-qubit system in 2023, and the final 50-qubit upgrade in 2025.
