What happened: Nvidia increases China workforce for autonomous driving tech

Nvidia has expanded its workforce in China by approximately 200 this year, aiming to bolster its research capabilities and delve deeper into autonomous driving technologies. Over recent years, the artificial intelligence chipmaker has grown its presence in the country, now employing nearly 600 people in Beijing and having opened a new office in the Zhongguancun tech hub. Globally, Nvidia had approximately 29,600 employees across 36 countries by the close of its fiscal year 2024, as revealed in a February filing. The company has not commented on the report.

Amidst this expansion, Nvidia faces an anti-monopoly investigation in China, perceived by many as a response to recent US restrictions on China’s chip industry. Despite this challenge, China remains a significant market for Nvidia, contributing around 17% of its revenue in the year ending January, down from 26% two years prior.

This strategic move aligns with the global demand for innovative solutions in vehicle automation. Additionally, despite the ongoing anti-monopoly investigation in China, Nvidia’s commitment to the market underscores the country’s ongoing significance to its revenue stream, contributing a substantial 17%. This expansion is a clear indication of Nvidia’s long-term investment in the Chinese market, despite recent challenges.
