    Ericsson boosts Japan R&D with 300 new jobs

    What happened: Expanding R&D presence in Japan

    Ericsson announced it will create up to 300 high-skilled research and development jobs in Japan. The company made this announcement during a visit by CEO Börje Ekholm. The investment shows how important Japan is to Ericsson’s global strategy.

    The new roles will focus on developing advanced radio access network (RAN) technologies for 5G and beyond. Ericsson will expand its existing operations in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Sendai, where it already employs over 1,000 people. The company is also collaborating with local universities on 6G research, including Yokohama National University and the University of Electro-Communications.

    Why it is important

    Japan is a leader in adopting cutting-edge connectivity technologies. Ericsson’s investment supports Japan’s goal to build high-performing digital infrastructure. This infrastructure will enable new technologies like artificial intelligence and smart city applications.

    Open RAN technology, a key focus of the investment, allows telecom networks to be more flexible and programmable. This helps operators meet changing demands quickly. The move also strengthens Ericsson’s ties with Japanese partners and suppliers.

    The global race to digitalise economies is intense. By deepening its R&D presence, Ericsson shows confidence in Japan’s technology ecosystem and skilled workforce. This commitment will help Japan maintain its lead in next-generation telecom innovation.
