    • The leaked data encompassed over 44 million messages from Disney’s Slack channels, indicating a significant breach of internal communications.
    • The data leak was attributed to a hacking group named NullBulge, which published sensitive information from Disney’s internal communications platform, Slack.

    OUR TAKE
The leak exposed personally identifiable information (PII) of employees and customers, including passport numbers and addresses. This raises significant concerns about identity theft and privacy violations. This incident is not just a concern for Disney but serves as a warning to other companies in the entertainment and tech industries.

    What happened

A significant data leak from Walt Disney has revealed sensitive financial and strategic information, alongside personally identifiable details of employees and customers, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Thursday. The breach involved over 44 million messages from Disney’s Slack workplace communications tool. The leaked data included: Personally identifiable information of employees, information related to Disney Cruise Line passengers, financial details and pricing strategies for parks. Sensitive login credentials for Disney’s cloud infrastructure have been leaked. This exposure raises concerns about potential security vulnerabilities and further risks to the company’s systems.

The breach, first reported in the summer, involved over a terabyte of data from one of Disney’s communication systems. The company confirmed in August that it was investigating the unauthorised release, which has now been detailed in a recent report. The hacking group NullBulge has been identified as the source of the leak. In July, NullBulge published data from thousands of Slack channels within Disney. Currently, Disney and Salesforce, the owner of Slack, have not responded to Reuters’ requests for comments on the situation.

    Why it’s important

The breach highlighted significant vulnerabilities in Disney’s data security practices. There were concerns about the potential for identity theft, highlighting the need for organisations to improve their cybersecurity measures. Enhancing these measures is crucial to safeguard sensitive information from unauthorised access. Disney’s cloud infrastructure likely stores a wealth of sensitive information, including financial records, customer data, and proprietary business strategies. Unauthorised access could lead to the exposure of this data, potentially impacting customers, employees, and business operations.

Such security breaches can damage Disney’s reputation, eroding public trust. Customers and business partners may lose confidence in Disney’s ability to protect their data, which could lead to a loss of business and damage to the company’s brand. This incident highlights the necessity for companies to invest in robust cybersecurity measures. It serves as a wake-up call for organisations to evaluate and strengthen their data protection strategies to prevent future breaches.
