• The Biden administration last week revised rules designed to make it harder for China to obtain U.S. artificial intelligence chips and chip-making tools.
  • This is a further impediment to the export and development of Beijing’s chip manufacturing industry.

China has criticised the US for tightening rules on semiconductor exports, saying it creates more barriers to trade and more uncertainty for the chip industry.

Revised rules

China is of the view that “the United States has expanded the concept of national security, arbitrarily changed the rules and strengthened the control measures”.

According to a Commerce Ministry spokesperson said in a statement. That has not only set up more obstacles and imposed a heavier compliance burden on Chinese and American companies who want to work together economically and in trade normally but has also created huge uncertainty for the global semiconductor industry.”

Previous restrictions on chip exports

Companies such as Nvidia and AMD were affected by the dispute when the US imposed an export ban last October.

The survival of Chinese technology companies such as Huawei in the face of US sanctions and unfair treatment highlights the challenges they face in the global marketplace. These actions not only impact individual companies but also raise concerns about fairness and equal access to technology.

A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said in response to a reporter’s question that “the move by the U.S seriously affects mutually beneficial cooperation between Chinese and foreign enterprises and harms their legitimate rights and interests. China firmly opposes this.
