What happened

Spotify is expanding its tool that utilises generative artificial intelligence (AI) to create playlists for premium users to four new markets, including the United States and Canada, the Swedish streaming giant announced on Tuesday (24th September).

AI Playlist, currently available in beta, assists subscribers in personalising their song selections, which can be further refined through additional text prompts.

Spotify is expanding AI Playlist to new markets, including Ireland and New Zealand, in an effort to attract more subscribers by enhancing its app with AI features, as competition intensifies from rival services offered by Apple and Amazon.com.

Spotify stated that the AI Playlist feature, which launched in the United Kingdom and Australia in April, will not generate results for non-music-related prompts, such as current events or specific brands, as it remains in beta.

In addition, the company offers other tools like “daylist,” a personalised playlist that updates daily with new music recommendations, and “AI DJ,” which curates music suggestions based on users’ listening habits.

Why it’s important

The company’s paying subscribers increased by approximately 12 per cent from the previous year, reaching 246 million during the second quarter.

The AI-driven playlists leverage machine learning to provide personalised song recommendations, significantly improving user engagement. Expanding this feature to key markets like the US and Canada allows a wider audience to experience highly customised content, increasing user retention.

The US and Canada are two of Spotify’s most profitable markets. Expanding AI features here can drive greater subscription growth, increased revenue, and bolster Spotify’s influence within the global streaming landscape.

In the increasingly competitive music streaming industry, with rivals such as Apple Music and Amazon Music, advanced AI capabilities help Spotify distinguish itself. Offering these features in major markets like North America strengthens its position and appeal.

By leading with AI innovations, Spotify strengthens its brand as a forward-thinking platform. Expanding these features to prominent markets allows Spotify to cement its reputation as an industry innovator in music streaming technology, helping to maintain its leadership position.
