What happened

Global PC shipments rose 3% in Q2, driven by AI-capable devices, with Apple seeing the largest growth among PC makers, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). Shipments reached 64.9 million units, marking a second consecutive quarter of growth. Apple’s shipments surged 20.8%, followed by Acer’s 13.7% increase.

The market is rebounding from a post-pandemic lull, boosted by AI hype and a commercial refresh cycle. IDC’s Ryan Reith noted that while AI is a key driver, non-AI PC purchases also contribute to market positivity.

Excluding weak results in China, global shipments grew over 5%. Lenovo led with a 22.7% market share, followed by Hewlett-Packard at 21.1%. Dell’s share was 15.5%, with shipments down 2.4%.

Why it’s important

The resurgence of global PC shipments signals a promising trend, with a 3% rise in Q2 largely driven by the demand for AI-capable devices. Apple’s remarkable 20.8% growth stands out, underscoring its strategic alignment with the AI hype.

This rebound, following a pandemic-induced lull, highlights the market’s resilience and adaptability. Reith’s observation about the significant role of non-AI PC purchases is crucial, it shows a balanced growth pattern rather than a one-dimensional AI-driven surge. However, the weak performance in China is a reminder of the nuanced challenges the market faces.

As the global tech landscape evolves, the integration of AI in PCs is not just a trend but a necessity, pushing manufacturers to innovate continuously. This momentum is set to redefine the PC market, blending advanced AI functionalities with everyday computing needs, promising a dynamic future for both consumers and businesses.
