Private RAN market exceeds 2024 expectations

    • Private wireless RAN revenues grew by 40% in 2023
    • Traditional RAN suppliers lead the market

What happened: Significant growth in private RAN market

In 2023, private wireless Radio Access Network (RAN) revenues increased by approximately 40%, bringing the private wireless sector to about 2% of the total RAN market. This growth contrasts with projections for public RAN and enterprise WLAN segments, both expected to contract in 2024. Traditional RAN suppliers, including Huawei, Nokia, and Ericsson, have maintained leading positions during this initial phase.

Excluding China, the top suppliers are Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung. The technology mix reveals that 5G dominates in China, while LTE prevails outside. Analysts project private 5G RAN revenues to reach between $1 billion and $2 billion by 2028.

    Why it’s important

The robust expansion of the private RAN market underscores a significant shift in the telecommunications landscape. As public RAN investments decelerate, the private sector emerges as a vital area for growth. This trend indicates a substantial opportunity for enterprises to adopt private wireless solutions, enhancing connectivity and operational efficiency.

The dominance of established RAN suppliers suggests their strategic positioning to capitalise on this evolving market. The anticipated increase in private 5G RAN revenues highlights the growing demand for advanced wireless technologies in enterprise settings.
