What happened: Nokia appoints Patrik Hammarén as president

Nokia has appointed Patrik Hammarén as the new president of its Nokia Technologies unit, effective immediately. Hammarén, who has been with the company since 2007, was serving as the acting president since October 2024 following the departure of Jenni Lukander. His appointment to the position marks a key moment in Nokia’s continued focus on managing and monetising its intellectual property (IP).

In addition to his new role as president, Hammarén has also been added to Nokia’s Group Leadership Team, reporting directly to Pekka Lundmark, Nokia’s president and CEO. Hammarén’s experience in Nokia’s patent licensing business, where he has held senior roles such as Chief Licensing Officer and VP of IoT licensing, makes him well-suited to lead the company’s efforts in growing its licensing business.

He is based in Finland and will oversee Nokia Technologies’ strategic vision, building upon recent successes such as the completion of smartphone renewals and expanding licensing growth.

    Why it’s important

Patrik Hammarén’s appointment comes at a critical time for Nokia Technologies, which is responsible for managing the company’s extensive intellectual property portfolio. With the demand for patent licensing and the monetisation of technologies in the telecommunications industry on the rise, Nokia is positioning itself to leverage these assets for growth.

Hammarén’s experience, particularly in patent licensing across various markets such as wireless technologies and IoT, is expected to enhance Nokia’s ability to secure new deals and partnerships. Nokia’s licensing agreements, including a recent multi-year deal with Samsung for its video technologies, highlight the growing importance of the intellectual property segment in the company’s overall strategy.

Hammarén’s leadership will be instrumental in strengthening these partnerships and expanding Nokia’s presence in key areas such as IoT and wireless technologies, which continue to be vital for the company’s financial growth.
