  • The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) plans to roll out new features in a mid-November software update to enhance the integration of RPKI and IRR routing security services.
  • The new features will allow for the automatic generation and management of IRR routing objects and the automatic removal of related objects when an ROA is deleted, as well as updating the Reg-RWS API to support these improvements.

OUR TAKE
ARIN aims to implement new features in a software update to enhance the integration of its Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) and Internet Route Registration (IRR) routing security services. These enhancements are based on feedback from the 20 September 2023 closing community consultation. New features include automatic generation of IRR route objects based on Route Origin Authorisations (ROAs) and automatic removal of associated IRR route objects when an ROA is deleted. ARIN plans to update the Reg-RWS API to reflect these new features and encourages users to contact them via email for more information.

What happened

ARIN plans to implement new features in a software update to improve the integration of its RPKI and IRR routing security services. These enhancements are based on feedback from community consultations and are designed to provide tighter integration of RPKI and IRR services. New features include the automatic creation and management of IRR route objects when generating ROAs and the automatic removal of associated IRR route objects when deleting ROAs. In addition, ARIN wants to update the Reg-RWS API to reflect these new features.

Brad Gorman, ARIN’s senior product owner, highlights in the update notice that these new features will be enabled by default, but users will be able to disable them through actions at the organisational level. Moreover, users will be able to choose whether or not to create automatically managed IRR routing objects each time an ROA is generated. All automatically managed IRR routing objects will be labelled in the Notes field. ARIN also wants to provide users with the ability to manually create, modify or delete all IRR routing objects on the manage IRR page of ARIN online. These updates are designed to improve routing security and efficiency while providing users with more control and flexibility.

Why it’s important

ARIN’s upcoming implementation of new features is significant in enhancing Internet routing security. By more tightly integrating RPKI and IRR services, ARIN aims to provide a more efficient and automated routing management solution, which helps to reduce the risk of cyber-attacks and improve overall Internet stability. These improvements are based on community feedback, ensuring that the usefulness of the features matches the needs of users, thus improving the user experience while securing the network.

The implementation of the new features will enable ARIN users to manage their network resources more efficiently. By updating the Reg-RWS API, ARIN further ensures the modernisation of its services and compatibility with industry standards, which are essential for maintaining a healthy Internet infrastructure.
