Some Internet Clocks Were Two Years Late. Then Came the Count

In one 1988 Internet survey, a few computers answered the time question from a calendar two years away. David Mills did what any sensible person would do with a network full of confident clocks: he counted the answers, checked the denominators, and returned in 1989 with a much bigger experiment.

One packet slips through because its repeated bytes have been folded away. The next packet is the same size before compression, but its bytes refuse to fold. A proxy that calls the first success a new tunnel MTU has sold a seat on a bridge that only one passenger can cross. MASQUE’s revised HTTP Datagram compression draft now draws the size boundary where the wire actually is: at the compressed frame, the current path and the receiver’s separate reconstruction limit.
