- The MOU covers HBM, Samsung’s 2nm-and-below foundry processes and advanced packaging through 2030
- The companies estimate the collaboration will exceed US$200bn but have not disclosed orders or production schedules
The fact
Samsung Electronics and Broadcom have signed a memorandum of understanding covering memory, contract chip manufacturing and advanced packaging. The companies estimate that the collaboration will exceed US$200bn over the five years to 2030. The agreement was announced at an AI Summit in San Francisco.
The companies plan to work together on high-bandwidth memory for Broadcom’s next-generation accelerators. Samsung would also provide 2nm-and-below foundry services for Broadcom products, including wireless broadband chips, as well as 2.3D and 2.5D advanced packaging. Samsung and Broadcom have not disclosed binding order volumes, named products or production schedules. The MOU sets out areas for future work rather than confirmed manufacturing commitments.
The assessment
The MOU gives Broadcom the option to source memory, wafer fabrication and advanced packaging from Samsung under the same commercial framework. That could make it easier for the two companies to coordinate a future chip programme, but only once specific products are assigned and qualified for production.
Those commitments have not yet been made. The companies have not identified the products, volumes or schedules involved, so the agreement does not show how much Samsung capacity Broadcom may use or whether all three manufacturing stages will support the same programme. For BTW readers, later contracts will determine whether the MOU becomes a defined manufacturing plan — with named products, assigned capacity and production dates.
What to watch
Watch for product-specific agreements, completed qualifications and disclosed orders for HBM, wafer fabrication or packaging. Those details will show which parts of the MOU are moving into production and on what timetable.
