Summary

  • Western Digital's fiscal Q1 2027 revenue rose 17% from the preceding quarter to $4.381 billion and GAAP operating income rose 31% to $2.046 billion. GAAP diluted EPS nevertheless fell 44%, from $8.21 to $4.63.
  • The fiscal Q4 2026 comparison included a $2.050 billion mark-to-market gain on WD's retained Sandisk interest. That gain did not recur in Q1. On WD's non-GAAP measure, diluted EPS rose 30% sequentially, from $3.56 to $4.64.

The quarter that looked worse because it worked better

If an earnings screen showed only Western Digital's GAAP diluted EPS, it would mark a bad turn: $8.21 in fiscal Q4, then $4.63 in fiscal Q1. The company's own results tell a different operating story. Revenue climbed from $3.747 billion to $4.381 billion. GAAP gross margin increased from 54.1% to 57.8%. GAAP operating income moved from $1.563 billion to $2.046 billion. A storage maker does not produce that combination by suddenly forgetting how to sell drives.

The missing piece sits below operating income. In Q4, WD booked a $2.050 billion gain on the market value of its retained interest in Sandisk, the flash business it had separated. In Q1, the comparable gain was zero. GAAP interest and other income or expense shifted from a positive $1.684 billion to a negative $8 million. A large valuation entry had made the earlier quarter's net profit look enormous; its absence makes the later quarter look weak when read through one EPS cell.

The $2.050 billion was a mark-to-market adjustment to a retained stake. Transaction costs, tax items and share counts also changed between quarters, so the gain cannot serve as a one-line bridge to EPS. WD's reconciliation shows Q4 non-GAAP diluted net income attributable to common holders of $1.382 billion and Q1 of $1.779 billion. On that measure, earnings rose 29% and diluted EPS rose from $3.56 to $4.64. The bridge exposes the gain that inflated the prior GAAP base.

The machines kept moving

The operating evidence is less theatrical. Q1 cash from operations rose to $1.604 billion from $1.389 billion in Q4. Purchases of property, plant and equipment increased from $108 million to $227 million. Free cash flow, under WD's reconciliation, still increased from $1.281 billion to $1.377 billion. The cash and operating lines moved up while the GAAP EPS line moved down.

Management points to exabyte growth and improved pricing and guides fiscal Q2 revenue to $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million. It guides non-GAAP gross margin to 60%–61%. Those are future targets. The recorded Q1 facts are a 17% sequential revenue gain, a 3.7-point rise in GAAP gross margin and a 31% increase in GAAP operating income.

Read the two EPS numbers without the Sandisk line and a healthy operating quarter becomes a fictional downturn. The asset-value event and transaction costs also matter to owners. The ledger tells readers which dollar came from selling storage and which came from a changing stake value.
