- Tianyi Linghangzhe can carry 8,000 tonnes of cable and bury systems at water depths of up to 1,000 metres
- Global Marine’s 2029 delivery forms part of a phased fleet renewal focused on fibre-optic cable maintenance
The fact
China commissioned Tianyi Linghangzhe in Shanghai on 15 July and began full-system cable-laying trials. The 116-metre vessel can carry 8,000 tonnes of submarine communications cable and is designed for cable installation, maintenance and repair in global waters. It has an intelligent dynamic-positioning system and a 5.5-metre burial system capable of operating at water depths of up to 1,000 metres.
Global Marine Group has signed a contract with Colombo Dockyard in Sri Lanka for a purpose-built fibre-optic cable-maintenance vessel. Delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2029. The hybrid-powered ship will combine generators and batteries with azimuth thrusters, shore-power connectivity and emissions-control equipment. Global Marine said the order is the first stage of a phased fleet-renewal programme.
The assessment
The two vessels address different operational needs. Tianyi Linghangzhe has entered trials, giving Chinese operators a domestically built platform that could support installation or repair work once testing and deployment planning are complete. Its effect on available capacity will depend on how much of its schedule is assigned to telecom cables and whether it serves domestic routes, international projects or maintenance contracts.
Global Marine’s order is mainly about fleet renewal rather than immediate expansion. Cable-maintenance vessels must remain available so they can mobilise when faults occur. Age, reliability and time out of service therefore matter as much as cable-carrying capacity. With delivery scheduled for 2029, the new vessel reduces future replacement risk, but it will add net capacity only if it supplements rather than replaces an existing ship.
For BTW readers, the relevant measure is usable vessel availability. These investments matter when they increase the number of ship-days available for cable installation and repair.
What to Watch
Watch Tianyi Linghangzhe’s first commercial assignment and whether it is allocated to domestic construction, international projects or standby maintenance. For Global Marine, construction milestones, maintenance-contract awards and confirmation of which vessel the new ship will replace or supplement will show whether the 2029 delivery adds net fleet capacity.
