The fact

North Media completed its DKK 9 million acquisition of the BEAM software platform from Bodil Energy on 31 August. BEAM is designed to let households, housing associations and businesses with solar panels, batteries, heat pumps or hot-water storage make those assets available to Energinet, Denmark's transmission-system operator, for grid balancing.

North Media is a Danish listed company whose core businesses are last-mile distribution and digital services. It has also installed solar and battery systems at FK Distribution facilities in Tilst and Taastrup, helping the group cover part of its own electricity needs since 2022. North Media says it will continue developing BEAM for households and businesses. It has not disclosed how many assets are connected or how much capacity they represent. The company expects BEAM to contribute a loss of about DKK 5 million in 2026.

The assessment

Buying BEAM moves North Media beyond managing energy assets at its own facilities. It now wants to coordinate equipment owned by households and businesses and offer the combined flexibility to Energinet. The practical challenge is no longer the software purchase itself, but bringing enough outside assets under reliable control.

Energinet's rules require aggregated portfolios and their control systems to pass technical tests and prequalification before they can participate in ancillary-services markets. North Media has not said whether any BEAM-managed portfolio has completed that process or how much capacity is ready to take part.

For BTW readers, the acquisition gives North Media the tool to assemble a grid-balancing portfolio, but not yet evidence that such a portfolio is operating. A prequalified pool with disclosed capacity and a record of actual dispatches would show that BEAM is supplying flexibility to the Danish grid.

What to watch

Watch for North Media to disclose a BEAM portfolio approved for Energinet's ancillary-services markets, together with its capacity and asset mix. Actual dispatches and balancing revenue would show whether the platform is moving from asset recruitment into grid service. Later financial reporting should also show how BEAM develops after the DKK 5 million loss expected for 2026.
