• Pembina estimates Meta’s Alberta data centre could add C$267–C$462 a year to average household electricity costs between 2027 and 2031
  • Alberta says Meta pays its own grid and connection costs, while Pembina argues the additional demand could still lift wholesale power prices

The fact

The Pembina Institute estimates Meta’s planned Alberta data centre could add between C$267 and C$462 a year to the average household electricity bill from 2027 to 2031. The research group argues that the project’s additional demand could tighten Alberta’s wholesale power market before enough new generation is available, pushing up energy prices.

Alberta’s government disputes that conclusion. It says Meta is paying for its connection and associated infrastructure and expects the project to contribute nearly C$200 million a year in transmission fees. The province has approved a 970MW grid allocation for the first phase. Meta has also challenged Pembina’s modelling, describing the projected bill increases as speculative. The figures are forecasts rather than measured effects and will depend on when the data centre, associated generation and other new supply enter service.

The assessment

The disagreement exposes a difference between paying to connect a data centre and what happens after its electricity demand enters the market. Meta can cover the direct cost of its grid infrastructure while its load still changes the balance between available generation and demand.

The timing of new supply is therefore critical. If a large data-centre load begins drawing from the grid before enough generation is available, wholesale prices could rise even though the developer has paid its connection costs. If new generation arrives alongside the load, that pressure could be smaller.

For BTW readers, Alberta’s model has two separate tests: whether developers pay for the infrastructure needed to connect and whether enough generation arrives when their demand does. Pembina’s forecast will depend largely on how closely those schedules match.

What to watch

Watch Meta’s first energisation date, the amount of load initially connected and when associated generation enters service. Alberta wholesale electricity prices and new generation commitments after the campus begins operating will provide the clearest evidence of whether the additional demand produces the market effects Pembina forecasts.
