- Nvidia is working with eight infrastructure partners on an Australian AI programme targeting up to 2GW of buildout by 2027
- The partners will provide and operate the physical facilities, while Nvidia supplies its computing platform, hardware, networking and software
The fact
Nvidia said it is working with Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport, ResetData, CDC, NEXTDC and AirTrunk on an Australian AI infrastructure programme targeting up to 2GW of buildout by 2027. The partners will expand the land, power and data-centre capacity needed to host Nvidia systems and will operate the facilities, while Nvidia supplies its computing platform, hardware, networking and software.
The projects are at different stages. Sharon AI is deploying up to 68,000 Nvidia GPUs, while IREN is applying Nvidia's DSX design across its development portfolio, including its planned 800MW Bundey campus in South Australia. CDC said it operates more than 550MW across Australia and New Zealand and has a further 800MW under construction. Nvidia did not disclose how the 2GW target is divided among the eight partners or how much of that capacity is already being built.
The Assessment
Nvidia can supply the computing systems, but each partner still has to deliver the infrastructure around them. Sites need sufficient power and completed data-centre space before Nvidia's equipment can be installed and put into service. The 2GW target therefore depends on several separate construction and expansion programmes reaching that point by 2027.
The announcement does not put all eight partners on the same timetable. Some already have projects or equipment deployments under way, while Nvidia has not said how much capacity each company contributes to the overall target. The headline figure should therefore be read as a combined buildout goal rather than 2GW of capacity that is already secured or scheduled to open at once.
For BTW readers, individual site milestones will show whether the programme is keeping pace with the 2027 target. Power secured, construction completed and facilities opened will determine when Nvidia's systems can actually be deployed.
What to watch
Watch for the eight partners to disclose capacity and delivery dates for individual Australian sites. Power agreements, construction starts and facility openings will show how much of the 2GW target is moving towards operation. A partner-by-partner breakdown would also clarify how much capacity is already under development and how much remains planned.
