The biggest threat facing telecom

When asked about the biggest threat to the telecom industry, Andrey was clear: “AIT is probably the biggest issue we are facing today.”

Unlike artificial intelligence or flash calls, which he believes can be managed, Artificially Inflated Traffic presents a deeper challenge. “It’s dangerous,” he explained. “Only the end customers — the enterprises being scammed—are not happy. All others like aggregators, wholesale carriers, even mobile network operators, they’re fine about that. It just makes their volumes bigger and boosts their margins.”

He recalled a recent case: “One of our customers told me they started seriously filtering out artificial traffic, and their volumes decreased by 50 percent. It’s difficult to be on the fair play side.”

Balancing AI use with human control

Asked whether Alaris Labs plans to use AI-based support engineers, Andrey said: “People will notice that. Our platform is very sophisticated. It’s not call center work.”

He explained that while Alaris Labs experiments internally with AI tools to assist support engineers, human oversight remains crucial. “It only works well when controlled by a human being,” he said. “Because when you do not have a human being controlling the AI… AI starts going its own ways.”

Alaris Labs has also launched an AI Traffic Classifier to analyse messaging patterns and detect spam, and is exploring AI-assisted routing management and reporting tools. “No guarantee it’s going to work, but we’ll try for sure,” Andrey added.

Keeping the company human-led

Despite growing automation, Andrey stressed the importance of keeping Alaris Labs human-led. “We don’t have AI colleagues here. All our colleagues are human, and I really value that,” he said.

He believes AI should support, not replace, human work. “AI is even worse than smartphones,” he warned. “Without critical thinking, you’ll be lost. You’ll be weak.”

Advice for young professionals

For younger telecom professionals, Andrey’s advice is simple: “Work. Don’t be scared to take upon you more work. Try new things. You grow your experience and knowledge this way.”

When it comes to hiring, he prefers a personal approach. “We still check every CV manually,” he said. “If you check everybody manually, you have fewer risks of overlooking someone important.”
