- Singapore has provisionally allocated 200MW of new data-centre capacity, with four operators receiving 50MW each
- The projects on Jurong Island come with commitments on green energy, liquid cooling and energy-efficient equipment
The fact
Singapore has provisionally allocated 200MW of new data-centre capacity to Digital Realty, Equinix, Keppel Data Centres and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres. Each operator received 50MW under the country's second Data Centre Call for Application, which attracted more than 20 proposals.
The projects are planned for Jurong Island, where JTC is developing a low-carbon data-centre park. The four operators have committed to source more than half of their capacity from eligible green-energy options and are expected to use liquid cooling, energy-efficient IT equipment and meet Singapore's Green Mark Platinum standard for data centres. The allocations remain provisional, and EDB and IMDA have not announced construction or service dates. The agencies said they will review the need for another allocation round in 18 to 24 months, a separate decision from the delivery of these four projects.
The assessment
The 50MW awards give each operator a defined amount of capacity to develop, but Singapore has attached conditions that have to be dealt with before those projects reach operation. Energy sourcing, cooling and equipment efficiency therefore move into the development process rather than being decisions left until a facility is already built.
For the four operators, that means securing qualifying energy supply while the facility design is still being worked out. Power, cooling and IT equipment have to fit the commitments made in the application, so progress will depend on those pieces moving together before construction and commissioning can turn the allocation into usable capacity.
For BTW readers, the 200MW headline is therefore only the starting point. The more useful measure is how quickly each 50MW award moves through energy contracting, design and construction towards commissioned IT capacity.
What to watch
Watch for energy-supply agreements, detailed facility plans, major equipment orders and construction starts for each of the four projects. Those milestones will show which provisional allocations are moving towards usable capacity, while Singapore's review in 18 to 24 months will indicate whether the government is prepared to release another round of data-centre capacity.
