The fact

Sharp has entered Japan's AI-server market, opening orders on 15 September for its first business model, an air-cooled, rack-mounted Nvidia RTX Pro server. Sales are planned for fiscal 2027. The company also plans to offer a higher-performance Nvidia HGX system for large-scale AI training and inference, although orders for that product have not yet opened.

Sharp is working with its Taiwanese parent, Foxconn, on procurement and manufacturing as GPU and other component supplies remain tight. In Japan, Sharp is developing sales, operations and maintenance support with external partners and plans to use parts of its existing nationwide service network. Domestic production is only a future option rather than part of the current launch.

The assessment

Owning AI hardware also means owning the downtime risk. The server has to arrive, be installed, connected to the rest of the customer's infrastructure and kept running. Sharp already has engineers in the field, but AI servers bring different demands from copiers or other business equipment. Expensive GPUs, cooling requirements and replacement parts all raise the cost of a slow repair.
