- RETN’s new service uses dark fibre between Rotterdam and Brussels and follows a different London path from its CrossChannel route.
- Customers will still need route-level evidence before treating it as a fully independent backup path
The fact
RETN has launched a spectrum route between London and Brussels, adding another connection between the UK and mainland Europe. The service uses newly built dark fibre between Rotterdam and Brussels, which RETN said will support its own dense wavelength division multiplexing network in Belgium.
The route avoids the Docklands corridors that RETN describes as heavily used. It also uses a different landing station from the operator’s CrossChannel service, which departs from Slough. RETN said the new path is intended to reduce reliance on established traffic hubs including Amsterdam and Paris. The company has not published the route’s capacity, a detailed physical map or results from resilience testing.
The assessment
The new route gives customers another path between the UK and mainland Europe, but a different London exit and landing station do not prove that the two services are fully separate. Customers still need to know whether both routes rely on any of the same ducts, optical equipment, power supplies or backhaul connections.
Shared infrastructure at any point could allow one incident to disrupt both circuits. RETN will therefore need to provide enough route-level detail for customers to judge whether the new service can function as an independent backup to CrossChannel. For BTW readers, the route’s value will depend on the separation RETN can verify across the full path. That evidence will determine whether customers can use it to build a more resilient UK–Europe network.
What to watch
Watch for RETN to disclose the route’s capacity, physical path and resilience-testing results. Details showing where it shares or avoids infrastructure used by other RETN services would indicate whether it provides meaningful end-to-end diversity.
