- Oracle is seeking 2GW of new renewable projects in New Mexico for delivery between 2027 and 2031
- No projects have been selected yet, with Oracle assessing readiness, technology and delivery timing
The fact
Oracle issued a request for proposals for 2GW of new renewable generation in New Mexico to support Project Jupiter. The company is seeking solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable projects that can begin supplying energy between 2027 and 2031. Oracle will also assess proposals based on factors including project maturity, technical viability and delivery timing. The procurement forms part of its plan to achieve 100% carbon-free energy matching for Project Jupiter by 2031. The company has not yet announced which projects will be selected or signed contracts covering the full 2GW.
Oracle separately announced up to $1 million for research into capturing and storing carbon dioxide associated with Bloom Energy fuel cells. It also plans to publish environmental data and commission independent assessments twice a year after the data centres begin operating. Those measures are still at the research or future-reporting stage, and the company has not reported completed carbon-capture installations or operating emissions results.
The assessment
For renewable developers, the timing of a project may matter as much as its size. Oracle wants generation that can be delivered between 2027 and 2031, so projects that are further through development may be better placed to fit the data-centre timetable. A large project still waiting on major approvals, financing or construction would carry more delivery risk than one that is closer to being built.
The 2GW figure also describes generation capacity rather than the amount of renewable energy available at every moment. Solar and wind output changes with weather and time of day, while a data centre needs electricity continuously. Oracle has said it wants carbon-free energy matching, but the RFP does not yet explain in detail how generation will be matched with Project Jupiter's electricity use or over what time periods.
For BTW readers, the next important step is which projects Oracle actually contracts and when they are expected to start generating. Those agreements will show how much of the 2GW target has moved from procurement into planned supply. Once Project Jupiter begins operating, Oracle's environmental reporting should provide further evidence of how the energy arrangements perform against its stated targets.
What to watch
Watch for selected renewable projects, signed capacity and their expected delivery dates. Oracle's final energy-matching method and later operating data will show how the 2GW procurement translates into measurable electricity supply for Project Jupiter.
