- Huawei Malaysia can monetise receivables linked to 5G radio equipment and services supplied for U Mobile
- The RM400 million facility supports Huawei’s working capital but does not measure activated sites, network coverage or service performance
The fact
Malaysia’s MBSB Bank has arranged a RM400 million Shariah-compliant receivables purchase facility with Huawei Technologies Malaysia. The financing supports Huawei’s supply of 5G radio access network equipment and services for U Mobile’s rollout.
MBSB said the structure allows Huawei to monetise receivables and improve its working capital while the rollout continues. The bank described it as Huawei Malaysia’s first use of this type of Shariah-compliant financing and one of MBSB’s largest structured trade and receivables transactions. The companies did not disclose how much of the facility has been used, the payment schedule or the volume of equipment and services already delivered.
The assessment
The facility gives Huawei earlier access to cash while it supplies equipment and services for U Mobile. This may shorten the wait between delivery and payment, but it does not mean the equipment is already operating. U Mobile still has to accept, integrate and activate the sites.
MBSB is financing money owed to Huawei, not completed network assets. Huawei may therefore receive cash before all the related equipment enters service. The companies have not disclosed the drawdown terms or how closely payments are linked to completed work. For BTW readers, the facility supports Huawei’s cash flow, but it does not prove progress in U Mobile’s rollout. Accepted equipment, activated sites, coverage and service performance remain the clearest measures of delivery.
What to watch
Future updates should show how much of the RM400 million facility has been drawn, what equipment Huawei has delivered and which work U Mobile has accepted. Site activations, population coverage and commercial launch dates will provide clearer evidence of rollout progress. The payment terms may also show whether financing is released only after agreed delivery milestones.
