• Kontron Transportation has won several contracts for railway communications work in Romania and will deliver the project with Hitachi Rail Romania over 48 months
  • The companies have not disclosed the contract value, Romanian route sections or specific communications technologies included in the work

The fact

Kontron Transportation said on 1 September that it had won several contracts linked to Romania's section of the Orient/East-Med rail corridor. The company is working with longstanding partner Hitachi Rail Romania and will provide what it describes as a complete railway communications solution over a planned 48-month project.

The wider Orient/East-Med corridor runs through eight countries from Germany to Greece and forms part of Europe's cross-border transport network. Kontron has not disclosed the value of the Romanian contracts, the route sections covered or the individual communications systems included.

The award therefore marks the start of a delivery programme rather than a completed network. Kontron's wider rail portfolio includes technologies such as GSM-R, FRMCS, transmission networks, private mobile networks, and cybersecurity, but the company has not said which of those products will be used in these contracts.

The assessment

Kontron now has a four-year delivery programme to turn the contracts into an operating railway communications system. The announcement does not identify the Romanian route sections or technologies involved, leaving the physical scope of the work unclear until further project details are disclosed.

The communications work still has to move through delivery, installation, testing and acceptance before entering railway operations. Those stages sit within a wider rail-modernisation programme, but Kontron has not explained how its timetable relates to track, signalling or other project work. There is therefore not enough evidence to conclude that delays in the communications package would delay the wider railway programme.

For BTW readers, the 48-month timetable provides the clearest measure of progress. Route disclosures, equipment deliveries, installation work and acceptance milestones will show what Kontron is actually deploying and how the communications work is advancing within the Romanian rail programme.

What to watch

Watch for Kontron to identify the Romanian route sections, contract value and communications systems included in the work. Equipment deliveries, installation starts, testing and acceptance dates will show whether the 48-month schedule is holding. GSM-R, FRMCS or other technologies should be treated as part of the project only when the companies confirm them.
