The fact

Nscale said on 31 August that it had closed approximately $3 billion of commitments across two senior secured delayed-draw term-loan facilities for AI infrastructure in the United States. Up to $1.85 billion is available for its Ward County campus in Texas and up to $1.2 billion for its Madison site in North Carolina. Both facilities received investment-grade ratings with stable outlooks.

The Texas loan will fund NVIDIA GB300 and VR200 systems supporting about 275MW of IT load, together with networking, storage and liquid-cooling equipment. The Madison site covers 96 acres and has up to 40MW of capacity. Its financing will pay for retrofit work, GPU infrastructure and networking. Nscale has not disclosed the interest rates, maturities, exact credit ratings or how much of either facility was drawn at closing.

The assessment

The financing gives Nscale committed capital for both projects, but the full $3 billion is not being deployed at once. The loans are delayed-draw facilities, which means Nscale can access the money over time as the projects progress. It has not disclosed how much was drawn at closing or what conditions must be met before further funds are released.

The two sites also have different work ahead. In Ward County, Nscale still needs to install the GPUs, networking, storage and cooling needed for the planned 275MW IT load. Madison is smaller, at up to 40MW, but the existing site must first be retrofitted before the new computing equipment can be deployed.

For BTW readers, the financing gives Nscale the funding to move both projects forward, but delivery is now the important part. GPU installation, completion of the Madison retrofit and the amount of capacity actually brought into service will show how quickly that financing turns into operating AI infrastructure.

What to watch

Watch how much Nscale draws under each facility, when GPU and cooling equipment is installed and when capacity enters service. Ward County's planned 275MW IT load and Madison's 40MW provide clear benchmarks for measuring how quickly the financing is being turned into operating infrastructure.
