The Facts

Macquarie Technology Group exercised its option to purchase a 34,200 sqm site in Macquarie Park for A$240 million. It plans an engineering and technology campus within a proposed data centre development of approximately 200MW. Settlement is expected within the next few weeks, according to customary procedures.

The design will be optimised based on planning approvals, power approvals, customer requirements, building stages and financing. Macquarie is considering capital recycling and development partnerships to help fund construction. Initial construction is expected to complete in late 2029, subject to approvals.

Assessment

Macquarie exercised its option on the site, but did not state how much of the proposed 200MW capacity will be in the initial build. Power approvals, customer requirements and construction financing will shape the capacity and timing of each phase.

The 200MW figure describes the intended scope of the completed campus rather than near-term delivery. Macquarie has kept the design and construction programme open to adjustment as remaining approvals and commercial requirements become clear.

For BTW readers, Macquarie is maintaining campus flexibility rather than committing to full 200MW construction from the start. Its competitive position will depend on how effectively it aligns power approvals, customer demand, financing and building stages as the project evolves.

What to Watch

Watch for planning approvals, power approvals, construction financing and initial build details. These disclosures will reveal how much of the proposed 200MW campus Macquarie's late-2029 target covers.
