- KIDZ AI has a three-year right of first refusal on up to 1MW at the Cambodia National Cloud Data Center, with capacity available in stages
- The agreement gives KIDZ a route into an operating facility before it builds its own site, but no capacity tranche or customer deployment has been announced
The fact
KIDZ AI said on 2 September that it had signed an agreement combining a proposed minority investment in HUADING Cambodia with priority rights over capacity at the Cambodia National Cloud Data Center in Phnom Penh. The agreement gives KIDZ a three-year right of first refusal on up to 1MW of load, which can be taken in tranches. It also gives the company a 30-day exclusive right of first offer on additional capacity that becomes available.
The facility is already operating and is described as a power-connected Tier III data centre with carrier-neutral connectivity and links to several international networks. KIDZ has not said that it is already using the full 1MW, and no first capacity tranche, GPU deployment or customer contract has been announced. The proposed minority investment in HUADING Cambodia also remains to be completed.
The assessment
KIDZ does not need to wait for a new Cambodian data centre before it starts deploying compute. The agreement gives it a place to begin inside an existing facility, with the option to take more capacity later if customers require it. That avoids committing to the full 1MW from the start.
The trade-off is that KIDZ will depend on another operator's building for power, space and network access. Its right of first refusal gives it priority over capacity, but that is not the same as having equipment installed and ready for customers. The business case only becomes clearer once KIDZ takes its first tranche and puts hardware into service.
For BTW readers, the important question is how quickly those capacity rights turn into operating compute. A first GPU deployment and paying customer would show that the agreement is supporting real demand rather than simply preserving room for future expansion.
What to watch
Watch for completion of the HUADING Cambodia investment, the first capacity tranche and the first equipment deployment at the Phnom Penh site. Customer contracts will show whether KIDZ is taking capacity in response to demand. Any use of the 30-day right over additional space would indicate that the initial deployment is expanding.
