The Fact

The International Telecommunication Union’s standardisation arm has accepted an SK Telecom proposal covering systems used to produce and exchange data for training robots. The proposal, titled Signalling Requirements and Architecture for Robot Data Factory, became a new work item at an ITU-T Study Group 11 meeting in Geneva from 14 to 22 July.

The proposal divides a robot data factory into five layers: services, robot models and data, infrastructure, devices and management. SK Telecom said the work would define the role of each layer and the interfaces between them. The aim is to improve compatibility between robots and learning platforms that currently use different data formats and interfaces. The ITU-T decision starts the standard-development process; it does not mean a final recommendation has been approved.

The Assessment

Robot manufacturers and software platforms often use different data formats and interfaces. Suppliers may therefore need to build separate connections between robots, training systems and the infrastructure supporting them. The proposed architecture would provide a common structure for assigning functions to each layer and defining how data moves between them. This could reduce the integration work required when systems from different suppliers need to operate together.

The work item is not yet a specification that suppliers can implement. ITU-T members must first agree the technical requirements. Robot manufacturers, software suppliers, and platform operators would then need to add the interfaces to their products and test whether systems from different companies can exchange data and functions as intended. For BTW readers, a completed standard could reduce the need for separate integrations between robot-data systems. Its practical value will depend on supplier adoption and successful tests involving different robots and platforms.

What to Watch

Watch for ITU-T to publish a draft recommendation and for manufacturers or platform providers to contribute technical requirements. Cross-vendor tests would provide the clearest evidence that the proposed interfaces work beyond SK Telecom’s own platform.
