Analysis
A committee election can look like housekeeping until you notice who controls the biggest room’s agenda. At RIPE 93, two Programme Committee seats were open. Three people stood: incumbents Antonio Prado and Babak Farrokhi, plus Tobias Fiebig. The closing plenary announced Prado and Farrokhi as re-elected. Both seats stayed with their previous holders.
That committee is not a ceremonial panel. RIPE says it recruits, selects and schedules the plenary programme; the RIPE NCC describes a body of up to 13 volunteers. Those choices decide which operational lessons, research claims and institutional questions get the meeting’s largest microphone. A slot is not a policy vote, but it can determine which argument gets heard by the room.
The ballot ran online from 27 October at 16:00 to 29 October at 17:00, UTC+2. RIPE planned to announce the result on 30 October, and did. Its election notice said aggregate voting numbers “may be public.” The candidate page now says voting is closed. The closing transcript supplies two names. Neither record gives the number of voters, ballots cast, or an electorate denominator.
The result is clear; its participation scale is not. A list of winners cannot tell readers whether many community members voted or only a small group did. It cannot show whether the contest was close, either. The sources support no guess about why Prado and Farrokhi won, or what every RIPE participant thinks of the committee.
This election authorizes a specific job: choose and schedule RIPE plenary content. That is enough power to make a count useful and bounded enough to report plainly. RIPE can place ballots cast and the eligible-voter definition beside the winner announcement. Then the next election will have a baseline, not just two names at the microphone.
