An order book can sprint; a data hall has to be wired
Equinix's 28 October results carry a tidy investor pairing: $533 million of annualized gross bookings and almost 40% more cabinets planned for delivery this year than in the opening plan. One number belongs to sales. The other belongs to construction. The distance between them is measured in power, cooling, installation dates and paying customers.
Bookings rose 35% from a year earlier. The second-quarter filing recorded $424 million, so the latest quarter added $109 million on that measure. Equinix defines it as the annualized monthly recurring revenue attached to newly executed contracts of at least a year, with specified netting and pricing adjustments. Its definition includes contracts expected to start producing revenue within 90 days. It is a useful forward sales signal; it is not a cash receipt for $533 million in the quarter.
The 40% figure has a different denominator: the number of cabinets Equinix first planned to deliver in 2026. The release does not print that starting count or a revised absolute count. A 40% larger delivery plan says the company is making room faster. It does not tell a reader how many cabinets have already been commissioned, where they sit or how much of the new capacity is billed. In June, Equinix said roughly 78% of its cabinet space was billed. That is the last utilization baseline in the evidence used here, not an October reading.
Location and power decide whether the two clocks meet. Equinix's filing warns that a data centre can have physical cabinet space and still lack the power needed for customers. Newer sites also have to handle heavier power and cooling demand per cabinet. Adding an empty frame in the wrong market or without enough electrical capacity is an impressive photograph and a poor invoice.
Other figures show why the company is willing to move quickly. The quarter added 6,900 net interconnections; interconnection revenue rose 10% year on year and Fabric revenue 24%, according to the release. Full-year revenue guidance is now $10.325 billion to $10.365 billion, while expected total capital spending is $5 billion to $6 billion. Those figures describe a growing platform and an expensive delivery programme. The investment case turns on how fast the new space becomes usable and billable.
The Equinix directory entry Only for Strategic Circle links the company to earlier coverage of its financing, Fabric channel and AI testing sites. This quarter supplies a different question: has the sales engine outrun the electrician, or has Equinix lined up construction tightly enough to keep pace?
