• Galaxy Campus includes a 120,000-square-metre supercomputing building and is designed to scale beyond 2GW
  • Envision has not disclosed the IT load or accelerator count currently operating at the site

The fact

Envision has commissioned the Galaxy Campus in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia. The renewable-powered AI site includes a 120,000-square-metre supercomputing facility and is designed to scale beyond 2GW. At full build-out, Envision says it could support up to one million AI accelerators and deliver one million PFLOPS of computing performance.

The campus combines directly connected renewable energy with dedicated transmission infrastructure, energy storage and Envision's AI Power System. It is the first flagship project under Mission Gobi, through which Envision plans to develop 5GW of AI computing capacity in desert and arid regions by 2030. The company has not disclosed the site's current IT load, installed accelerator count or customers, so the 2GW figure refers to planned scale rather than confirmed operating capacity.

The assessment

The commissioning confirms that Galaxy has entered operation, but it does not show that the advertised 2GW scale is already online. Envision’s figures describe the campus at full build-out, so the more useful measure now is how much IT capacity has actually been energised and brought into service.

The campus is designed to combine computing with dedicated renewable generation, transmission and storage. Scaling towards 2GW will therefore require those systems to expand alongside additional computing equipment. The one-million-accelerator figure also remains a full-build target rather than an installed fleet.

For BTW readers, Ulanqab is now the first commissioned site under Mission Gobi. Disclosures on live IT capacity, installed accelerators and customer deployments will show how much of Envision’s planned energy-and-compute infrastructure has actually moved into operation.

What to watch

Watch for Envision to disclose its current energised IT load, installed accelerator count and named customer deployments. Details on renewable generation, transmission and storage capacity would also show how much of the integrated power system is supporting the campus. These disclosures will provide a clearer measure of how far the site has progressed towards its planned 2GW-plus scale.
