• CEC began offering BizAxis IaaS as a standalone cloud infrastructure service in Japan on 15 September
  • The base service covers computing, storage and networking, while backup, monitoring and security are offered separately

The fact

Japanese IT services company CEC began offering BizAxis IaaS as a standalone service on 15 September. The service provides computing, storage and network resources from CEC's data centres in Japan and uses virtualisation software that does not depend on VMware products.

CEC first announced the broader BizAxis platform in February 2025. That service combined cloud infrastructure with development tools and application-platform functions. The new BizAxis IaaS offer separates the infrastructure layer so customers can buy the underlying computing environment without taking the wider platform package.

CEC says the service is designed, operated and managed in Japan. It advertises a 99.99% service-level commitment supported by redundant equipment and network infrastructure. Backup, operational monitoring and security are available as optional services rather than being included automatically in the base package. CEC does not publish a standard monthly price and says charges are provided by individual quotation.

The assessment

BizAxis gives Japanese companies another option for running virtual machines without building their environment around VMware. Moving away from one virtualisation platform, however, is only part of a migration. Applications still have to be tested, data moved and recovery arrangements checked before a workload can safely go into production.

The way CEC has packaged the service makes the cost comparison especially important. Computing, storage and networking form the base offer, while backup, monitoring and security can add to the bill. A lower infrastructure quote may therefore be misleading if it is compared with an existing service that already includes some of those functions.

For BTW readers, BizAxis is most useful as another option for companies reviewing their current cloud or virtualisation costs in Japan. Before moving a critical workload, buyers need to know exactly what CEC will operate, what remains their responsibility and whether the application can be recovered and supported after the migration.

What to watch

Watch for early customer migrations and details of what they buy alongside the base infrastructure. Migration time, backup and recovery tests, monitoring arrangements and the total cost of running the same workload will provide a clearer comparison with existing platforms than the infrastructure price alone.
