- Cambium Networks Ltd entered administration on 14 September, with RSM appointed to seek buyers for assets and potentially some or all business lines
- The group had cut 260 employees three days earlier, equal to 53.6% of its global workforce, with no severance offered or paid
The fact
Cambium Networks Ltd, the UK subsidiary of Cambium Networks Corporation, entered administration on 14 September. David Shambrook, Gordon Thomson, Joe Barry and James Woodhead of RSM UK Restructuring Advisory were appointed joint administrators. Cambium said the administrators would attempt to sell assets, including some or all of its business lines, while the remaining entities in the UK group are expected to be wound up through local processes.
The filing followed a large workforce reduction on 11 September. Cambium terminated 260 employees, representing 53.6% of its global workforce, effective immediately and without severance payments. The company also eliminated the role of Senior Vice President, Products.
Cambium supplies fixed wireless, Wi-Fi and network-management products used by service providers and enterprises. The administration filing does not say that existing support, warranty or management services have stopped, but it does not identify who will operate those functions after the restructuring either.
The assessment
A Cambium radio already mounted on a tower does not stop passing traffic because the company behind it enters administration. The exposure appears later: when hardware fails, a security problem needs a firmware update, replacement stock runs short or an operator needs vendor support to resolve a fault.
That gives WISPs a job they can do now. They can count deployed units and spare stock, identify which equipment depends on Cambium-hosted management, and check which warranties or support contracts remain open. The result shows where a prolonged interruption to vendor support would become an operating problem rather than simply a procurement problem.
For BTW readers, this is a support-chain issue around equipment that may remain in service for years. The administrators' sale process now matters because a buyer taking on product lines and support obligations would leave operators in a different position from a sale limited to patents, inventory or other assets.
What to watch
Watch for RSM to identify buyers for Cambium business lines and clarify whether firmware development, technical support, warranties, RMA processing and cloud-management services will continue. Distributors may also disclose replacement-stock availability. For operators, the first warning signs would be unanswered support cases, delayed RMAs, disappearing firmware releases or difficulty obtaining compatible replacement radios.
