- Theseus Infrastructure has appointed former CyrusOne executive Krupal Raval as chief executive as it prepares US data-centre projects for Anthropic
- Funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management and GIC will own the platform and provide most project equity, while Anthropic will anchor demand through long-term agreements
The fact
Theseus Infrastructure has appointed Krupal Raval as chief executive as the data-centre platform moves towards developing capacity for Anthropic in the United States.
Raval was previously executive vice-president and chief strategy officer at CyrusOne. He earlier led Equinix's xScale hyperscale business and held senior finance roles at Digital Realty, including chief financial officer for its Asia-Pacific operations. His previous work has included hyperscale development, institutional joint ventures and relationships with large data-centre customers.
Theseus was established through a partnership involving Anthropic, Macquarie Asset Management and GIC. Funds managed by Macquarie and GIC will own the platform and provide most of the equity required for individual projects, while Anthropic will act as anchor tenant under long-term agreements. No sites, capacity figures or delivery dates have yet been disclosed.
The assessment
Raval's appointment moves Theseus from a disclosed financing structure towards project execution. The platform already has infrastructure investors and an anchor customer; it now needs to turn that structure into sites with land, power, approvals and completed data-centre capacity.
His experience at Equinix xScale is particularly relevant because that business combined institutional capital with hyperscale customer demand. Theseus is attempting a similar sequence: external investors fund physical infrastructure while a large technology customer supports demand through long-term leases.
The concentration is on the customer side. The announced projects are intended around Anthropic's requirements, and Theseus has not said whether it will eventually lease capacity to other tenants. For BTW readers, Raval's appointment makes named sites, power arrangements and delivery dates the next evidence to watch. Those disclosures will show whether Macquarie and GIC's capital is being converted into operating capacity for Anthropic.
What to watch
Watch for Theseus's first US site, its planned IT load, land and power arrangements, financing and ready-for-service date. Lease terms or disclosures on additional customers would clarify how dependent each project is on Anthropic. Any detail on how Anthropic's commitment to offset electricity-price effects is implemented would also show how power costs are allocated around the projects.
