- SK Hyper will secure sites, develop substations and recruit customers for new AI data-centre projects
- SK Telecom approved up to ₩750 billion through 2030, while its 15GW target remains conditional on future projects
The fact
SK Telecom has established a wholly owned company to develop future AI data-centre projects and approved up to ₩750 billion in phased capital contributions through 2030. The subsidiary, SK Hyper, will secure sites, build and operate substations, attract customers and prepare projects for investment and delivery.
SK Telecom plans to open 5GW of AI data-centre capacity in stages from 2029 and expand towards 15GW by 2035. The company said later development would depend on market demand and other project conditions. It has identified Ulsan, Chungcheong and Honam as target regions. Existing projects, including Ulsan, remain under arrangements led by SK Broadband, while SK Hyper will focus on new, longer-term developments.
The assessment
SK Hyper changes how SK Telecom will organise early-stage data-centre development. Site preparation, substation work and customer discussions can now be handled by one company, reducing coordination between separate teams and giving partners a clearer point of contact.
That structure does not settle the requirements for individual projects. Each site will still need sufficient power, financing, approvals and enough customer demand to justify construction. The contribution of up to ₩750 billion gives SK Hyper capital to prepare projects, but it does not fund SK Telecom’s full 15GW target. For BTW readers, progress should be judged through individual developments rather than the long-term capacity figure. The first test will be whether SK Hyper can bring together a specific site, defined capacity, power arrangements, financing and committed customers.
What to watch
Watch for SK Hyper to identify its first project and disclose its location, planned capacity, substation arrangements and customer commitments. Those details would show whether the subsidiary has moved from corporate formation into a defined development stage.
