Samsung‘s semiconductor business remains optimistic about the market outlook for the second half of this year despite ongoing challenges. To enhance efficiency and meet market demands, Samsung is adjusting its chip factory operations.

Specifically, Samsung is modifying the construction progress of its P4 plant in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, to prioritise building the PH2 cleanroom. Previously, Samsung had announced the suspension of constructing new production lines at the P5 plant.

Samsung is adapting its construction plans based on market dynamics. Pyeongtaek is a key semiconductor manufacturing centre for Samsung, serving as the hub for its foundry business and the production site for memory chips. Currently, the P1, P2, and P3 plants are operational, while P4 and P5 are under construction.

Samsung aim to capture more customers from TSMC

With the temporary halt in construction at the P5 plant, Samsung will focus on completing the PH2 cleanroom at P4, dedicated to foundry chip manufacturing. Samsung aims to expand its foundry capacity to capture more customers from TSMC.

The P4 production line will also construct the PH3 cleanroom for producing storage chips like DRAM. Reports suggest Samsung adjusted its construction plans anticipating increased demand for these products in the near future, aiming to prepare capacity to meet the demand.

There are challenging market conditions

Despite Samsung previously stating the suspension of the P5 production line for inspection, market analysts speculate that Samsung may be slowing down construction due to the challenging market conditions. Samsung has faced significant setbacks due to the tough market situation, even cancelling all bonuses for chip department employees this year.
