• Students and teachers from the top 15 schools in the 2026 Learn-AI School Innovation Challenge completed a two-week placement at Mauritius Telecom
  • The placement introduced participants to AI use across the company, but no student project has been identified as moving into a pilot or live deployment

The fact

Mauritius Telecom has completed a two-week internship programme for students and teachers from the top 15 schools in the 2026 Learn-AI School Innovation Challenge. Participants received their certificates on 31 July at Telecom Tower after spending time with the company, learning how different teams work and seeing how AI tools are used across the business.

The placement builds on the Learn-AI School programme, which covers AI fundamentals, research and creative thinking, responsible AI and basic technology project development. Mauritius Telecom supports the initiative alongside Dayforce, DoraCrea and public-sector partners. The company did not say whether participants worked on live systems or whether any projects developed during the internship would continue into internal testing or production.

The assessment

The placement moves the programme beyond classroom exercises and gives participants a closer look at how AI is handled inside an operating telecom company. A school project can stop at the idea or prototype stage. Inside a business, a tool has to fit an existing process, have a clear owner and work within the company’s technical and operational rules.

Mauritius Telecom has not said that students built systems now being used by the company, so the programme should not be treated as an AI deployment initiative. Its value at this stage is more practical: students are seeing what happens between building an idea and putting technology into day-to-day use.

For BTW readers, the next question is whether future cohorts are given defined problems from within the business and whether any of their work continues after the placement. That would show a more direct connection between the training programme and Mauritius Telecom’s own operations.

What to watch

Watch whether future cohorts are assigned specific operational or customer-service problems rather than only observing existing AI use. Internal testing, named pilots or student-built tools moving into live use would be stronger evidence of practical involvement. It would also be worth tracking whether participants later return through technical internships, graduate roles or other structured positions at Mauritius Telecom.
