Summary
- C-DOT opened its sixth academic Centre of Excellence at IIT (BHU) on 23 October. Its public research menu closely matches the menus published for IIT Hyderabad in June and IISc in July.
- IIT (BHU) already lists three active projects in adjacent 6G and quantum testbed work, led by Atul Kumar and scheduled through 2028.
C-DOT has opened a sixth telecom research centre. The technical menu has been served before. Its 23 October announcement for IIT (BHU) lists 5G Advanced/6G, very large-scale MIMO, integrated sensing and communication, AI-native networks and devices, and quantum and post-quantum communication. C-DOT’s June announcement for IIT Hyderabad and July announcement for IISc name the same set of advanced research areas. (IIT (BHU) launch notice; IIT Hyderabad announcement; IISc announcement)
Varanasi does bring a real campus base. IIT (BHU)’s electronics department lists three active testbed projects under Atul Kumar. One, funded by Uttar Pradesh’s CST agency at ₹13.08 lakh, develops joint sensing and communication for 6G through October 2028. A Department of Telecommunications project worth ₹166.6 lakh builds an RIS-enabled sensing-and-communication testbed through September 2028. A third, backed by IIT (BHU) with ₹55.47 lakh, covers free-space quantum sensing and secure communication through July 2028. The institute’s project list and Kumar’s faculty record identify the work and its status. (department project list; Atul Kumar’s project record)
Those are existing IIT (BHU) projects, not assignments made by the new announcement. C-DOT’s own framework supplies the route from campus partnership to actual work: the MoU is the umbrella; each specific project is formalised through an individual Project Agreement. C-DOT has published a sharper example before: its 2024 TTDF agreement with IIT Roorkee and IIT Mandi named a Cell-Free 6G access-point project and its principal and co-investigators. (C-DOT CoE framework; Cell-Free 6G agreement)
So the new centre adds a Varanasi partnership and a campus already working on adjacent technologies. Its published research menu is familiar across C-DOT’s newer CoEs. The first IIT (BHU) Project Agreement—with a named experiment, team and deliverable—will give the sixth centre its own line on the page. Until then, the distinctive addition is the address.
