Summary
- APNIC’s Executive Council unanimously adopted the 2027 Activity Plan and Budget, which includes an AI-assisted translation pilot at APNIC 64.
- The public plan names no supported languages, translation format, correction process or evaluation measure.
The word “pilot” is doing a lot of work in APNIC’s 2027 plan. It is the only public clue to an experiment intended to make APNIC 64 more accessible; the machinery behind it is still offstage.
APNIC’s Executive Council approved and adopted the 2027 Activity Plan and Budget unanimously under Resolution 2026-09-02 at its 6–7 September meeting. The plan lists “a pilot of AI-assisted translation to improve accessibility at APNIC 64” among community-engagement activities. The minutes were adopted by circular resolution on 19 October. This is an approved plan item, not a report that a service is already running.
The destination is concrete. APNIC’s event notice puts APNIC 64 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 2 to 9 September 2027: workshops run 2–5 September, partner meetings are scheduled for 6 September, and the conference itself for 7–9 September.
The specification stops at the promise. It names no languages, says whether translation will cover live speech, captions or written material, assigns no human review or correction owner, and sets no public measure of success. Those are not decorative details. They determine who can follow a session, whether a bad rendering can be fixed, and whether APNIC can tell the difference between a working tool and a colourful screen.
Heng Lu’s Note 73 draws a useful line: participation can supply expertise and input, but access alone does not hand anyone decision-making authority. Translation can widen the room people can follow. It cannot, by itself, change who sets the agenda or decides what happens next. APNIC has stated the accessibility goal; the language list and correction path will show what the pilot actually tests.
