SK Telecom announced in August 2023 that it would make an additional USD 100 million investment in Anthropic, the San Francisco AI safety and research company behind Claude. The announcement followed a prior investment from SK Telecom Venture Capital and paired the capital commitment with a partnership agreement.

The operating mechanism is model customization for telecom. SK Telecom said it and Anthropic would jointly develop a multilingual large language model for telcos, supporting languages including Korean, English, Japanese and Spanish. Anthropic would work with SK Telecom to fine-tune Claude for telecom customer service, marketing, sales and interactive consumer applications.

That makes the relationship more than passive funding. SK Telecom contributes telecom operating knowledge, Korean-language LLM work and Global Telco AI Alliance distribution context; Anthropic contributes frontier model capability and product roadmap direction. SK Telecom's release says Anthropic co-founder and chief science officer Jared Kaplan would oversee the industry customization direction and product roadmap.

The control surface is where telecom operators sit in the AI stack. If the partnership works, SK Telecom gains a route to telco-specific model capability for its own services and for allied operators. If it does not, the investment becomes minority exposure to a fast-moving AI company without clear operating leverage in SK Telecom's network, customer-care or enterprise-product base.
