The fact

Swiss startup Exclaim Robotics has raised $4.95 million in pre-seed funding from Founderful and Playfair to develop robots for AI data-centre maintenance. The company was founded by Helen Oleynikova, a former ETH Zürich researcher who has worked at Google, Microsoft and Nvidia. Exclaim is building a mobile robot for physical work inside data halls. The company says its intended tasks include cleaning and replacing optical components, reconnecting copper cables and reseating drives. The robot is designed to move between racks, position itself beside the equipment and reach components from floor level to the top rail.

Exclaim describes the system as autonomy-first, with remote operation available when the robot cannot complete a task confidently. The company has not disclosed a data-centre customer, operator pilot, commercial price, production timetable, supported equipment list or measured intervention results.

The assessment

Exclaim is trying to move part of rack maintenance from on-site technicians to a robot that can act on a hardware alert. That changes the maintenance process only if the system can match the alert to the correct rack and component, complete the physical task and stop when the equipment or cabling differs from what it expects.

The unresolved issue is how often the robot can work without human help. Exclaim says remote operation will be available when confidence is low, but it has not disclosed supported rack designs, intervention success rates or the frequency of operator takeover. Data-centre operators would therefore need to limit early use to clearly defined tasks and configurations before allowing the robot to handle a broader range of equipment.

For BTW readers, Exclaim must first prove that a robot can complete one defined rack task reliably in a live data hall, with clear human oversight and a record of every intervention. Until then, the company is still developing the tool rather than replacing existing remote-hands work.

What to watch

Exclaim has not named a pilot partner or first production task. A live trial should report the equipment involved, completion rate, intervention time and reasons for human takeover. Operators will also need records of failed attempts and confirmation that the robot can stop safely when it encounters an unfamiliar rack configuration.
