The fact

Amazon Web Services said on 15 September that it cannot restore access to resources and data that remained exclusively in its Middle East (Bahrain) Region after physical damage affected multiple Availability Zones.

AWS said the damage exceeded what its regional and multi-AZ services were designed to withstand. The company had previously urged customers to move workloads out of Bahrain, and said most affected customers re-established operations elsewhere using backups or alternative arrangements before the region became fully unavailable.

The UAE Region has fared differently. AWS says resources and data held only in one of its three UAE Availability Zones cannot be restored. Recovery work continues in the other two zones and in shared regional systems. AWS expects to provide another UAE update in the coming months and a Bahrain update in early 2027.

The assessment

The Bahrain loss draws a hard line between keeping a service available and keeping its data recoverable. Spreading a workload across several Availability Zones protects against many failures inside a region, but those zones still belong to the same regional footprint.

When damage reaches several zones at once, the surviving copy has to be somewhere else. That may mean another AWS Region, another provider or a backup system outside the affected infrastructure. Each option adds cost and, for regulated workloads, questions about where the data is allowed to be stored.

The UAE result shows the difference. Losing one Availability Zone does not necessarily remove the whole region; Bahrain shows what happens when the failure reaches beyond that boundary. For BTW readers, multi-AZ architecture should not be treated as a substitute for regional recovery. If every usable copy of important data remains inside one cloud region, a region-wide physical failure can leave nothing for the provider to restore.

What to watch

Watch whether AWS restores the two affected UAE zones and shared regional services, and what it says about Bahrain in early 2027. Customer disclosures will show which recovery designs worked in practice. Any change to AWS guidance on cross-region backup, disaster recovery or regional resilience would indicate how the company is applying lessons from the loss.
