The fact
Diraq and Equinix plan to install an eight-qubit silicon-spin quantum computer at an Equinix data centre in Sydney, with installation scheduled for completion in October 2026. The companies say it will be Australia's first quantum computer operating inside a commercial data centre and the world's first silicon-spin system in a shared commercial facility.
The system combines the quantum chip with self-contained cryogenic cooling and control electronics. Diraq says the complete installation will draw less than 20kW and require minimal integration with the existing facility. The deployment will be used to test remote monitoring, network connectivity and secure integration with conventional CPUs and GPUs. Diraq also says higher qubit counts can be introduced by replacing the silicon chip without changing the surrounding infrastructure, although that has yet to be demonstrated at larger scale.
The assessment
The October installation will put Diraq’s design into a commercial data-centre environment rather than a laboratory. Diraq says the cryogenic cooling and control electronics are built into the system, leaving Equinix to provide power and network connectivity. Once installed, the practical evidence will be whether remote operation and links to conventional CPUs and GPUs work as planned.
The more important comparison will come when Diraq changes the quantum processor. The company says higher-qubit chips can be fitted without rebuilding the surrounding system. That has not yet been shown. Later upgrades will reveal whether the same power, cooling and supporting equipment are sufficient as the hardware develops.
For BTW readers, this is not a scale story yet. It is a test of how much specialised infrastructure Diraq’s machine actually needs inside a commercial data centre, and whether those requirements remain manageable when the system is upgraded.
What to watch
Watch whether the system is installed in October and whether Diraq reports successful remote operation and connections to CPUs and GPUs. The stronger test will come with later chip upgrades: if higher-qubit processors can be installed without changes to power, cooling or other facility infrastructure, that would support Diraq’s claim that the surrounding system can remain in place as the hardware.
